Preparing for a SkinBetter Chemical Peel
4 weeks before your appointment:
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and sunless tanning beds for 4 weeks before your treatment. Optimize your sun protection by wearing sun-protective clothing, a hat, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every 2 hours while outdoors.
1 week before your appointment:
- Avoid products and treatments that may cause skin irritation or sensitivity (such as chemical peels, waxing, etc.). It is okay to continue your skincare regimen as long as it does not cause skin irritation. It is recommended, especially if you have sensitive skin, to discontinue all retinoids and exfoliating products 1 week before your peel (e.g. AlphaRet, retinol, Retinal, tretinoin or RetinA, Tazorac, salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid).
On the day of your treatment:
- If you have had a cold sore (herpes virus infection) in the past, take acyclovir or valacyclovir (Valtrex) as directed and continue taking it for 5 days. Like sunlight, laser light can cause a flare-up, and the medication reduces this risk.
- If you have active herpes or an infection in the treatment area OR if your skin is irritated, we cannot treat you.
How long before I see results from a Skinbetter chemical peel?
Results are gradual over the next few months. After three treatments, most people see optimal results.
What happens during a Skinbetter chemical peel treatment?
AlphaRet Peel is applied after your face has been thoroughly cleansed. After the peel is removed, the skin is cleansed with a post-peel cleanser.
How long does the treatment last and are there any downtimes with a Skinbetter chemical peel?
The treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes in total. We recommend that you have 2-3 peels spaced a month apart so that you can see results after just one peel.
Does a Skinbetter chemical peel hurt?
In most cases, superficial peels only cause a mild tingling or burning sensation.
Skinbetter Chemical Peel Aftercare
In order to provide you with the best possible service, please carefully review these general aftercare instructions for your chemical peel treatment to ensure you fully understand them. In order to get the most benefit from your treatment, it is essential that you understand and follow these instructions. Failure to follow these instructions may affect the outcome of your treatment and increase the likelihood or severity of complications.
Depending on your individual needs, your provider may provide you with additional aftercare instructions.
- If peeling occurs, peeling may last an average of 7-10 days or longer, depending on internal and external factors such as skin type, age, weather, lifestyle, and hormones. Mild redness, skin sensitivity, and peeling may occur as your treatment removes dead surface skin cells. Each treatment may vary. Other parts of your body will react differently because your skin has a different texture on your face and scalp than on your chest, back, arms, and legs. The healing process may take longer in these areas.
- Your skin may become rough, patchy, and dark for a few days after this treatment. This is normal and expected and will resolve on its own. The first areas to peel are usually around the nose and mouth, but it can start anywhere. Most people start peeling on the 3rd or 4th day after treatment. It is also possible that there will be no peeling at all. If this happens, you will still benefit from the treatment because the skin is being peeled microscopically.
- Avoid any aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity for the first 48 hours.
- The use of a sunscreen with a protection factor of 30 or higher is warranted at all times, but with the minimum legal use of SPF for at least a week after the peel. It is recommended that you continue to use these products to protect your skin and maintain the benefits of your peel even after the first week.
- Avoid direct sun exposure. Too much sun exposure can cause improper healing and in some cases can reverse the benefits of your peel and lead to unwanted hyperpigmentation that may take months, if not 1 year, to correct.
- Be gentle with your skin – DO NOT exfoliate – you may experience mildly red, dry or flaky skin for a few days or more after your peel.
- Do not pick or pull at the peeling skin.
- Possible side effects include, but are not limited to: mild to severe redness, temporary tightness, hyperpigmentation, itching, swelling and dryness of the skin similar to sunburn or windburn. This will usually go away in 2-3 days. Prescription hydrocortisone or over-the-counter hydrocortisone (Vanicream HCR) may be recommended if the skin is inflamed or irritated.
- You may GENTLY apply a cool compress to the treated area(s) if needed for any stinging or irritation associated with your treatment.
- Avoid excessive heat to the treated area and direct sun exposure of any kind, as well as tanning beds and self-tanning to treated areas for 4 weeks after
