Gynecological ultrasound
Gynecological ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the internal organs of the female reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. This examination is noninvasive, safe, and painless, and is used to evaluate a variety of conditions and problems related to reproductive health.
TYPES OF GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND
- Transvaginal ultrasound
An ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina, allowing a detailed examination of the uterus and ovaries.
It is used to diagnose problems such as abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, fibroids, monitor early pregnancy, and evaluate the endometrium.
- Transabdominal ultrasound
The ultrasound probe is placed on the abdomen, through the skin. It is used for general pelvic examination, pregnancy monitoring, and in patients who are not suitable for transvaginal ultrasound.
INDICATIONS FOR GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND
- Pregnancy monitoring
Assessing fetal growth and development, determining the due date, monitoring multiple pregnancies.
- Abnormal bleeding
Diagnosing the cause of irregular menstrual bleeding or bleeding after menopause.
- Pelvic pain
Evaluating the cause of pain, such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Infertility
Assessment of the structure of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries, and monitoring of ovulation.
- Myomas and polyps
Diagnosis and monitoring of benign growths in the uterus.
- Ovarian cysts
Identification and monitoring of cysts, and distinguishing between benign and malignant cysts.
- Post-operative examination
Monitoring of the condition after surgical procedures on the reproductive organs.
PREPARATION FOR GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND
- Transvaginal ultrasound
No special preparation is required. It is recommended to urinate before the examination to empty the bladder.
- Transabdominal ultrasound
It is necessary to drink several glasses of water before the examination to keep the bladder full, which helps in better visualization of the pelvic organs.
During the gynecological ultrasound
1. Transvaginal ultrasound
The patient lies on a table with her legs in stirrups. The ultrasound probe, covered with a protective sheet and lubricated with gel, is gently inserted into the vagina. Images of the internal organs are displayed on a monitor.
2. Transabdominal ultrasound
The patient lies on her back. Gel is applied to the abdomen to allow better contact of the probe with the skin. The probe is moved across the abdomen to obtain images of the pelvic organs.
AFTER the gynecological ultrasound
The doctor will analyze the images and provide feedback on the findings. In some cases, results may be available immediately, while more detailed analyses may take a few days.
If further tests or treatment are needed, your doctor will advise you on the next steps.
BENEFITS OF GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASONIC
It is non-invasive and painless. The examination is performed without surgery or needle sticks. Images are obtained in real time, allowing for rapid diagnosis. There is no radiation, making it safe for pregnant women and all patients.
Gynecological ultrasound is a key tool in diagnosing and monitoring many conditions related to reproductive health. Regular check-ups can help detect problems early and ensure timely treatment. If you have any questions or concerns, it is always best to consult a gynecologist.
