Description of Dermapen treatment
Dermapen consists of individually sealed and sterile cartridges with needles that are disposable. During the treatment, the therapist uses the device and moves it up and down on the patient’s skin. The needles make 1300 micro punctures per second and these microchannels stimulate the skin’s healing process and trigger collagen production.
By stimulating collagen production, Dermapen triggers the body’s ability to repair and regrow new skin cells in response to the micro-damage caused by the microneedles.
The Dermapen treatment is precisely controlled so that it does not damage the surface layer of the skin. It actually stimulates collagen production by activating three phases of CIT. The first phase begins when the body releases its growth factors that cause the epidermis to grow, fibroblasts to form, and matrix.
The second phase begins with the production of collagen and elastin.
The third phase represents the result of the Dermapen treatment – the skin tissue is remodeled and the skin becomes firmer.
The treatment plan includes the number of treatments that will bring the best results. The therapist will also choose the length of the Dermapen microneedles according to the patient’s skin type and skin concerns. For example, the therapist may use a needle length of 0.13 to 0.25 mm to improve the absorption of skin care products. For acne scars, on the other hand, the therapist will use a 1.5-2 mm needle to penetrate deeper into the skin layers.
The length of the needle is manually changed and can be adjusted according to the area being treated.
Before the treatment begins, the patient’s skin is cleansed and an anesthetic cream is applied if necessary. The therapist then applies the Dermapen applicator over the patient’s skin. Avoid using skin care products that contain any of the following active skin resurfacing ingredients for up to 5 days after your Dermapen treatment:
- Mechanical peels
- Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) including glycolic, lactic, or malic acid
- Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) including salicylic acid
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Retinoids (including tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, and retinol)
- Hydroquinone
- Bleaching agents
